Born in London, England to Jamaican parents, Ms. Tracii McGregor, the Vice President and General Manager of dancehall-reggae icon Buju Banton’s independent record label Gargamel Music Inc., handles all business and day-to-day operations from the US office. Before claiming Gargamel as her home away from home, McGregor previously served as Vice President of Content & Communications at The Source Enterprises, where she swiftly rose from Lifestyle Editor in 1996 to becoming the highest-ranking female executive at the company by the time she departed in late 2004.
During her tenure as VP, McGregor was responsible for executing the CEO’s creative vision of expanding The Source trough various multi-media partnerships and oversee all Public Relation initiatives for the entire business. She spearheaded several key brand-extension projects, including serving as Supervising Producer of The Source Hip-Hop Music Awards, Co-Executive Producer of The Source All Access television show, creating and developing The Source Radio Network and The Source Daily Dose news blast, Producer of The Source Hip-Hop Hits compilation series.
As Lifestyle Editor and then Executive Editor for The Source magazine, McGregor dealt with not only the essence of hip-hop music but also the culture itself. She was able to stay close to her community roots by nurturing pertinent columns and pioneering such critical annual features as The Jamaican History of Hip-Hop (Reggae Package) and the Global Hip-Hop Movement.
McGregor later moved on to run TheSource.com web site, where she also hosted the hip-hop talk show One Nation. Under her watch in 2000, www.thesource.com won the SOHH Online Hip-Hop Award for Best Magazine web site. Her documentary Joe Gotta Go!, was featured in the 2001 Urban World Film Festival. The short chronicled a tumultuous mayoral run-off election in Selma, Alabama, in which political kingpin James Smitherman was finally ousted in favor of the city’s first Black mayor, James Perkins.
Prior to joining The Source, McGregor held such high standing positions as Director of Media Relations at Payday Records/Empire Artists Management, Managing Editor at Urb magazine, Music Editor for Rap Sheet magazine, and freelanced for Vibe, Spin, Bikini, Rap Pages, Flavor and Ego Trip magazines. She has been quoted in such prestigious media outlets as Time magazine, NY Times, Daily News. Television appearances include MSNBC, UPN 9 News, WB11 News, NBC News, Geraldo, Court TV, VH1, MTV.
Ms. McGregor earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism and Community Studies from the University of California in 1992.
